THE BOMB, Hal Russell completed his 4th Tour Divide Mountain Bike Race, unsupported, unsanctioned, for 2713 miles in under 28 days, his old record… He is the oldest to finish the race. On the trip, Hal encountered grueling hills/mountains (over 10,000 feet numerous times), bugs (mosquitoes), snakes, bears, wind, rain/mud, snow and many other difficulties. Hal Russell, the super experienced biker, with 3 Tour Divides under his belt, knows how to handle problems.
To start off, Hal’s bike broke a tooth off the large hill climbing sprocket in the rear. His fantastic abilities allowed him to continue to Butte, Montana some 600 miles later to get it fixed. Not a lot of bike shops on this arduous extremely long distance off-road mountain bike race.
In this grueling kind of race, the riders often ride into the night, get only a small amount of sleep and start of early the next morning. Hal Russell gave us this picture of riding down Fleecer Ridge, SW of Butte, at night. He said it was fun riding down Fleecer Ridge.
Hal got a slit in one of his tires along the way. He patched it and got it fixed later.
Some people may think that doing this challenging adventure is no picnic. Hal Russell enjoys the trip and gets to see some fantastic views up close, like this shot he took of his Trek Superfly bicycle and gear next to this beautiful lake.
